What is Purgatory? We could launch into a deep discourse on the definitions and meanings that are debated and discussed. For the Pax today there was a “dead man” experiencing suffering at the hands of the Pax. There may have been some suffering live Pax as well.
YHC got the friendly reminder earlier in the week about the Q at Purgatory this week and thought that of a great way for the Pax to suffer through some work as well as a boring lecture from a self professed know it a little. The idea was to bring out the perpetual FNG Matt Bobby (a cousin of Ricky Bobby) while YHC would ramble on about some stuff that was likely only interesting to him.
The clock hit 0700 and the numbers were surprisingly optimal with 13 Pax willing to experience some Purgatory. Unfortunately there were no FNGs (sorry to have been slack in the recruiting lately) but a disclaimer was given.

The Thang: We picked up Matt Bobby and Moseyed to the Lido Deck for the first part of the workout. The structure of the workout was set up so while one of the Pax performs hands only CPR the rest of the Pax does the called out exercise for 1 minute. YHC demonstrated the technique and led off doing CPR for the first round. We stuck with 1 minute of CPR/Exercise and a 10 second pulse check between rounds of CPR/Exercise.

NMM:
YHC was pleasantly surprised with the turnout this am despite competing with the Q school and the always popular IS. We had a good mix from Hate Hate Hate to Respects.
The idea for the hands only CPR class was a recycle having done a similar workout at Flatline several months ago. There weren’t many if any Pax who had been to the original workout.
Carrying Matt Bobby around the AO drew much less attention that when we carried him around downtown.
CPR is really only going to be effective if it is done early. That has been part of the community push for folks to just do compressions and not worry about giving rescue breaths. The reason for that is to keep the compressions going and to hopefully encourage more people to do compressions without the fear of having to put your mouth on someone.
The first thing to do when you find someone down is to call 911 (which is why there should be at least 1 Pax carrying a phone at every workout). Then you can touch the patient’s shoulder (or try the Juice Box technique) to see if the patient is responsive. If the person is not responding most people will start CPR at this point. There is discussion about the utility of checking for a pulse before you start CPR. For most non medical Pax you can start CPR at this point. Just be ready to stop if the person starts saying ouch or telling you to stop (true stories).
We talked about proper location and form for CPR. You kneel beside the person who you have placed on a hard surface (don’t try this in bed) with your hands interlocked with the heel of your hand in the center of the sternum (breastbone) trying to keep your hands in contact with the chest (not bouncing up and down) and your arms straight under your shoulders so that you can use your core and back to deliver the compression not just flexing your arms. You want to do about 100 compressions a minute.
We also talked about the special times where you need to give rescue breaths as well as CPR in drowning patients and you may have to only give rescue breaths for victims of lightning strikes.
There was ample time for discussion today since YHC did not bring music. YHC could not stand the thought of one hour of Staying Alive and wanted to be able to lecture to the Pax without distraction. There were several G rated jokes today and lots of good comments by all.
Some grumbling took place during a few of the exercises and there was some father and son competition going on with Ripple seeming to be the victor.
Speaking of Ripple, he had grabbed a Van Gogh sized rock and he powered through all of the exercises until he capsized during the American Hammers.
Parkay was not to be out done in the competition for smallest rock today – good job.
Zima Ran in and Out from WeFoCo to get his miles in for the Chicago Marathon and the Pilot to Hanging Rock Ultra.
Not much running today but YHC’s legs are almost as sore as his shoulders.
Pony displayed the new Shovel minus Flag for the AO and it was looking great. TClaps for designing and building the new Shovel Flag. It was unfortunate that the Site Q was not there to take ownership.
Great to see Ziggy out today
We all had fun joking around this morning as we were working and doing CPR. YHC hopes that the Pax picked up a little knowledge that they will never have to use. If anyone has any questions or wants a real class on this or any other basic first aid just let YHC know and we can put it together. We will likely do another one of these sessions in future so keep your eye out for Matt Bobby to show up at an AO near you.
Announcements:
Splash is raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, so keep an eye out for announcements about details and donate.
The Pony Express has the Q at VI on Monday and he is planning a special theme that already secured an HC from Goofy.
COT: YHC took us out giving thanks for us all to have the opportunity and ability to be out with each other this morning and asking for us to be the change that we would like to see in the world. Also, asking for us to be a light that may help others see a path out of the darkness or through their daily struggles.
I was a pleasure as always to be out with you all this morning.
