As a last minute substitution Q, my mind returned to Memorial Day. I regretted not being in town to complete my first Murph. As of the writing of this BB, I will never regret missing a Murph or be able to forget my miserable attempt to complete it. (For evidence of my pull-up success, see my partner, Cherry Pie – he did about fifty curls of 170 lbs)
A Murph consists of running a mile, doing 100 pull-ups, 200 merkins, and 300 squats; then running another mile. Looked possible on paper, but so does Duke keeping all their BB recruits for 4 years.
It was a warm, humid morning full of derision and MC – in fact, I think a record was set when the Q began to receive grief during the F3 Mission statement. However, the good thing about a Murph is how it quells MC quickly. We had a great group – a lot of young guns. We worked hard and there were impressive efforts noted – Cheesesteak, The Vig, Tonka, Gelding, Van Gogh and maybe Drip? were a few I remembered knocking out the pull-ups. Mutton and Lamb Chop had a wonderful conversation while running their first mile. I did not hear it all since I fell behind them in oxygen debt and lost touch. Credit to Cherry Pie and Snookie for making the second mile look easy. And welcome to Shake Weight – his background was given by a very informed Tonka. FNG, now “Shake Weight” is in shape and is another really nice young guy in F3 who smiles too much when I am in pain. He is in W-S from Ohio for the Fellows Program and counts his macros (whatever).
And if pain and suffering build F3 fellowship, today gave me as much “fellowship” as I can handle. Great job men. It was an honor. Thanks for the keys Glazer. I think I left them on top of my car.

For a little history, check out this great blog post.
In case you’re unfamiliar, “Murph” is a classic CrossFit workout known as a Hero WOD. Hero WOD’s are made by CrossFit to honor the men and women that have fallen in the line of duty. This one is specifically to honor Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005, and was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor. The movie “Lone Survivor” depicts his heroic actions and how he was killed.
This workout itself was Michael’s favorite workout to do, which at the time referred to it as “Body Armor”, hence the 20 lb vest or body armor as part of the workout prescription. So, every year, CrossFitters synonymously around the world pay special tribute to Lieutenant Murphy by joining together and suffering through this workout.

Well Done Thistle! It’s always the simple workouts that inflict so much pain. Cheesesteak is beast and YHC appreciated the push from him this AM as we got half way through this miserable beat down.
