“Burns’ Weekend Plans” or, “A 2 miler with some stops along the way”
QIC: Burns
Date: 3-8-2019
PAX: Bevo, Root Canal (WD, old), Zima, Snooki, Blue Steel, TSA, Dr Seuss (WB), Cheesesteak, Chisel, Tonka, Burns (Q)
Warmorama – SSH, Arm Swirlys forward & back, Seal Clap, Whirlys got the clap, Abe Vigoda
PAX were informed that today’s workout would consist of visits to a number of my favorite places in downtown Winston doing some exercises that may or may not be topical, starting with…
Incendiary Brewing – derkins, quick feet, LBC all x20 OYO. Incendiary is the youngest brewery in Winston with a number of delightful beers on tap. They also will only hold the title of youngest brewery for a short while longer, as a new one is scheduled to open in July or August of this year over near Wise Man.
mosey up 5th, take a right on Liberty and stop at…
Crafted “The Art of the Taco” / Dogwood Hops & Crops / The Trophy Room Bourbon Bar – mike tyson, calf raises, crunchy frogs all x20 OYO. Crafted has delicious unique tacos & rice bowls that make you wonder if your concept of a taco has been too limited your whole life. Dogwood has a $3 pint special on Tuesdays, Trophy Room has a 1/2 price whiskey special on Wednesdays. Fun atmosphere at both spots.
continue up Liberty to…
Artivity – dips, jump squats, low flutter all x20 OYO. Artivity is a cool set of interactive sculptures that you can climb on, sit on, or just enjoy walking through. There’s also a mural wall that is constantly being updated by local artists. It’s a great spot to eat your Crafted tacos if you order them to go.
take a left on 7th and a right on Trade and end up outside of…
Mary’s Gourmet Diner – merkins, single leg squats (10 each leg), heels to heaven all x 20 OYO. Mary’s is unquestionably the best breakfast spot in town, and they have recently moved their schedule to open at 8AM on Saturdays and Sundays, alleviating the long lines that used to form prior to their later opening times. They’ve also updated their menu and always serve fresh local food.
turn around and mosey back down Trade to stop at…
Finnegan’s Wake – 20 burpees. I don’t really like this bar at all, but it was the first bar I ever went to after moving to Winston and also the first (but not only) bar I’ve thrown up in downtown (see: Rec Billiards, Old Winston Social Club). So we did burpees.
continue down trade, take a left on 5th and mosey to…
Small Batch + Burger Batch – irkins, squats to the chair, mtn climbers all x20 OYO. Small Batch makes great beer and better bloody marys. Small Batch shows EPL and other int’l soccer on the weekends. Burger Batch makes massive and creative milkshakes. Need I say more?
mosey down 5th for a few blocks and wind up outside of…
Forsyth County Public Library – carolina dry docks, glute bridge (30 sec hold), alphabet abs (topical!) all x20 OYO. My M and I love the new library, it’s free to join and they don’t charge late fees for overdue books. Blue Steel noted that they do charge for overdue DVDs, but who has a DVD player anymore? There’s also a fun children’s area with cool seating, tabletop interactives, and more for those of you with 2.0s. Plus, it’s right across from Bib’s and I will certainly cause no controversy by saying that Bib’s is the best bbq spot in town with really no close seconds.
make the block and head back up 4th street for the home stretch, with a stop at…
Footnote/Bookmarks – wall sit w/jack reachers, head + shoulders + knees + toes, alternating shoulder taps all x20 OYO. Bookmarks is an independent bookstore with an adjoining coffeeshop/taproom owned by Foothills. You can take your books into the taproom and read, or if you’re Cheesesteak, you can take your beer into the bookstore and browse. It was here that we learned that Zima doesn’t like books, or art, or anything intellectual really.
back up 4th to…
Mooney’s Mediterranean Kitchen – overhead claps, lunges (10 each leg), wwiis. Mooney’s has the best falafel in town, and great burgers + mediterranean sides. They also have 1/2 price falafel on Tuesdays, so grab your M or significant other and get some falafel then walk up the street to Dogwood for a $3 pint for an enjoyable and economical date night.
mosey back to Bailey Park, fin.
NMM
Apparently ‘mosey’ means something different to Root Canal than the rest of us.
Zima is uncultured.
Bevo either doesn’t know his ABCs or has really bad handwriting.
Snooki thought this was a brewery tour. I am not a drunkard, I just like beer. And doing things while drinking beer. And doing things close to establishments that serve beer.
Chisel, Dr. Seuss, Blue Steel, Tonka & TSA were silent assassins today – no MC but tons of hard work from those fellas.
Cheesesteak and I have very similar tastes in entertainment. More than once he would pipe up and second my favoritism of these selected establishments.
PAX enjoyed guessing destinations…more than once they thought we were heading to a strip club. I didn’t know there even were any in or near downtown, so there you have it.
As an educator, I feel it is my duty to constantly pass along knowledge to those who are thirsty for it. I hope the PAX who were out today found a new spot they want to check out…downtown has a ton of great things to offer, and more spots that we didn’t have time to visit – including but not limited to Wise Man, Fiddlin Fish, Camino Bakery, Twin City Hive, Krankies, Canteen 411, Spring House, 6th & Vine, and a/perture Theater. Go somewhere new this weekend & support local businesses!
CoT
There’s a poetry reading at Footnote tonight, admission is free. It is a showcase for the LGBTQ+ community in WS, could be a great way for Zima to interact with local artists.
West Salem Public House, aka The House That Fokker Built, has its one year anny tomorrow. Food trucks, pop-up shops, good beer, Duke-UNC bball game.
No prayer requests, YHC took us out with thanks and a challenge to be a light to the city this weekend.
Thanks for the keys, Cheesesteak. Hopefully we run into each other downtown so I can give them back.
