BeanBagBlockBurpeeBearcrawlBeatdown

QIC: SGT Schultz

Date: September 10, 2019

PAX: Boomerang, Drama Queen (WD), Gucci, Schneider, SGT Schultz & Ziggy Stardust -- PLUS the following runners: Harden, H.O.G., Huckleberry, Touch Me Not, AND wait for it . . . . RAMSES!

While YHC was daydreaming yesterday, trying to recall a song by Rush that didn’t absolutely suck  (no success), I came up with an idea for a non-running workout that combined some friendly competition involving beanbags with some blocks, bricks, bearcrawls and burpees.  It went like this:

WARMARAMA:   A typical medley of SSHs, Hillbillies, Seal Claps, Overhead Claps, Mountain Climbers, Whirly with the Clap [it burns like Hell!], Abe Vigodas, standing hamstring stretches and seated groin stretch.  Drama Queen thought I gave too many directions for the seated groin stretch, so I simplified it for him to just ‘GO’ and ‘STOP.’  (Which was probably necessary for a UNC-CH alumnus)

THE THANG:   The PAX (A SixPAX of awesome if you ask me) divided up into two teams of 3 (YHC intentionally instigated some confusion into who was on what team just for the fun of it) and then moseyed to the block pile, where each PAX selected a cinder block and a pair of bricks.   We then lined up in across the driveway on the side of the school next to the cafeteria.   YHC posted one of my collapsible lights about 20 yards away from the line, which was our target.  The workout went like this:

Each round, one member of each team tossed a cornhole beanbag toward the light.   The team whose beanbag landed closest to the light “won,” while the other team “lost.”   The “losing team” had to do 21 reps of the listed exercise, then bear crawl to the light, where each losing team member performed 5 burpees, then bear crawl back to the starting line.   The “winning” team only had to perform 15 reps of the listed exercise, then perform squats with a cinder block (or monkey humpers, if you got tired of winning) until the losing team was finished bear crawling back to the start line.   REPEATO through the listed exercises, which were as follows:

  • Curls with (with block/bricks)
  • Lateral Raises (with bricks)
  • Overhead press (with block/bricks)
  • Upright Rows with block (with block/bricks)
  • Bus Drivers (with block/bricks)
  • Skull Crushers (with block/bricks)
  • Merkins
  • Halos (with block/bricks)
  • Cabbage Patch (with block/bricks)

We went through the entire list of exercises and did a second round of curls until 6:08 a.m. rolled around.   The tide ebbed and flowed, with each team seeming to win two or three rounds in a row before starting a losing streak of there own.  (Lesson Learned:  My F3 gloves are not very good for throwing, tending to mess up my release of the Bean Bag.  At least that is my excuse for sucking 2 out of my 3 turns!)  I think some fun was had by all.  We put the blocks and bricks away, gathered up the lights, beanbags, speaker & phone, and the Shovel Flag, and returned to the parking lot for Mary.  By that time, the runners had returned from their frolic and joined us for MARY, all with the exception of Ramses, whom it is rumored will spontaneously combust if any part of his body other than his feet touch the ground.  (I Keed! I Keed!)

  • Touch Me Not gave a very touching account of his feelings about 9/11, and how September 10, 2001 was the last “Normal” day for him, just like it was for so many of us who lived through that terrible day and the tough times and challenges since then.
  • H.O.G. prayed us out, thanking our Lord for one another and our ability to collectively push ourselves farther and harder than we would ever venture alone, and to reminder us that we depend on each other as we go through life, and that it is OK to lean on each other.  Prayers for those who need healing and for the lives that have been lost, and for the ability to appreciate just how precious life truly is.   Let us appreciate our blessings and to not take things for granted.

Thanks for the keys, Gucci!!
