Fun With Rocks

QIC: SGT Schultz

Date: October 5, 2019

PAX: BAM, Bulldog, Burlap, D-DAY, Parquet (WB), Pony Express, SGT Schultz, Spamalot, Splash, Undertow

Yesterday morning, YHC and Whirly sat together at a Continuing Legal Education simulcast here in town.   When YHC advised Whirly that I had the Q at Purgatory the next morning (hoping that Whirly would post — he didn’t), Whirly decided to play a joke on the PAX.  He took a picture of me watching the simulcast with a notepad on the table next to me.  On the notepad was written “300 Burpees, 300 Box Jumps, 15 Laps on the Cinder Track.”  Whirly sent these pictures out into the Twitterverse, representing that he had caught me planning my Q for Purgatory.   YHC thought it was a pretty good joke until about 0655 this morning, at which time no one else had yet to shown at the Speas Elementary parking lot.  I was concerned that maybe he had taken the joke a little too far.   Fortunately, a total of 10 PAX showed up in short order and we had a pretty good workout.  It went something like this:

WARMARAMA:  A medley of SSHs, Imperial Walkers, Seal Claps, Overhead Claps, Arm Swirly Things, Whirlies With a Clap, Abe Vigodas, and some stretches.

THE THANG:

STATION # 1:  Mosey to the rock pile behind the school, were we paired off into buddy teams.  Each team selected a rock, with which we performed 21’s of the following exercises:

  • Curls
  • Overhead Press
  • Upright Rows
  • Skull Crushers
  • Front Raises

To my relative surprise, many PAX were unfamiliar with 21’s.   They go like this:  Partner # 1 does one rep with the rock.  He hands it to Partner # 2, who does two reps.  Partner # 2 in turn hands the rock back to Partner # 1, who does three reps, and so on and so on until Partner # 1 does twenty-one reps to finish the exercise.

There was some significant mumble chatter, it if not outright bitching, as the exercises went along and the “cumulative effect” started to take effect.

STATION # 2:  The next phase of the Beatdown consisted of a DORA comprised of the following:

  • 100 Combat Merkins (I named them “Combat Merkins” because they are part of the new Army Combat Fitness Test.  This Merkin consists of a hand-release Merkin with your hands placed shoulder width apart.  After raising your hands from the ground, you then fully extend both arms perpendicular to your body before returning them and repositioning them under your shoulders for the next rep)
  • 200 Crunchy Frogs
  • 300 Monkey Humpers

The running distance was 50 yards from the exercise line.   Again, lots of negative mumble chatter and calls for the word that Peyton Manning used in order to audible a play.   YHC relented and allowed for the 100 Combat Merkins to be reduced to 75.   Splash was pissed because he and Spam had already done 90 reps by that point.

Time indeed flies by when you are having fun.  When all PAX had completed the DORA, we were staring 0754 right in the face.  We ran back to the parking lot for a few minutes of Mary.

MARY:   We met up with 3 runner PAX: Patch, The Vig and Hoptoberfest, who had finished their regular 22 mile run.  They joined us for MARY and for the Circle of Trust.   Mary was performed by committee, including O’s (thanks, Pony Express), Flutter Kicks (courtesy of Spam) and (called by Hoptoberfest).

Excessive. That is the word for the number of reps with the rocks. The Vig, the Baron himself was the third runner.

Temps were quite nice at 61 with overcast skies and slight breeze. Sgt Schultz successfully restrained himself from choking DDay and Spam and Solash who kept yammering and would not let him demonstrate the combat merkin. The MC successfully delayed the Dora by about one minute.
