A new Spot-I-Q at TRQ
QIC: Burlap and Daniel Ek
Date: 21 Nov 2019
PAX: Wobegon (WB), TPS (old), Resistor (really old), Burlap (ancient & Q), Boomerang (WD)
YHC pulled out a workout he had led at TRQ in March 2017. That was back when I had three months free of Spotify premium and was able to set-up a playlist in an exact order.
Now, I still don’t pay for Spotify, but put up with the periodic ads. But I have the same playlist in my library.
So today, I decided to use that playlist and let Spotify shuffle it — if we hit ads, we would do burpees while waiting on the ads to finish — and that happened at the very end, ugh.
I had picked the exercises to match the tempo of the music, so that if the pax were to match the beat, the workout would be vigorous and difficult. Even without matching the beat, it did not disappoint.
Here is what Spotify picked in approximate chrono order:
- Boogie Shoes (KC and Sunshine) — mountain climbers and Freddie mercs
- Uptown Funk (Mark Ronson) — copperhead squats and ski abs
- Heathens (21 Pilots) — rock slides and burpees
- Basket Case (Green Day) — SSHs and burpees
- Welcome to My House (Flo-rida) — ISTs, Whirlies, and OH Claps
- Lights Come On (Aldean) — curls, skull crushers, and OH presses
- Lovely Day (Bill Withers) — high plank until he sings “me” or “you” at which you do one merkin; on chorus when he holds the word “day”, go to six inches and hold (crowd pleaser)
- Giveitaway (Red Hot CP) — peter parkers/low flutters/parker peters/low dolleys
- I’m Your Boogie Man (KC again) — Mike Tysons and Russian Twists
COT
- Farm Run 5K for Piedmont Land Conservancy on Dec 15 — at Crossnore — see Wobegon
- Prayers for Boomerang’s sister who continues to battle cancer and has lost some friends to that disease recently
- Prayers for folks who have suffered loss this year and are facing the first set of year-end holidays without loved ones
- Prayers for folks dealing with mental health issues
- YHC took us out.
NMM
- Daniel Ek is the Swede who co-founded Spotify and currently serves as its chief exec. He picked the songs; I just pushed the play button.
- Each pax was pretty ambitious with his rock choice.
- There is a surprising amount of auto traffic behind Speas at 5:55 a.m.
- Some pax thought we were at a workout at the Y…
- …Except it was 34 degrees.
- A couple of pax got rid of a layer, especially after the Ski Abs in Uptown Funk which, according to TPS, is a longer song than you think.
- YHC didn’t even need my heavy gloves, using a lighter version I normally use in the low 40s.
- Resistor knew that 21 Pilots was the artist for Heathens; his younger daughters are proud.
- YHC ruined a very nice, pleasant song by the great Bill Withers, “Lovely Day”, for all the pax.
- YHC enjoyed this workout in a disturbing, sadistic way, but enjoyed the company much more.
Thanks for the honor or leading,
Burlap

Resistor
Awesome workout, really well thought out. Amazing how SSH can hurt when mixed in with Burpees.
A few observations: burlap was the only one wearing shorts.
Burlap was so focused on leading that several times the pax decided to “rest” and Burlap was still at it not noticing we all had quit ! beast mode .
Enjoyed sharing the morning with all you fine fellows !
Stan Scott
Well done Burlap! We got so mesmerized by the Spotify selection that we almost stayed late, I think. Burlap was in beast mode and an exceptional beatdown.
