20 years later – Remembering Eric

QIC: Spamalot

Date: 12/02/20

PAX: Dr. Toot (WD), High Cotton, Splash, Little Piggy, Wobegon, Suede (WB), Spamalot (QIC)

As YHC pulled into the parking lot, the temperature was 28 degrees.  By far the coldest workout in recent memory.  This was confirmed by the fact that there was only one other car there.  Good old Splash – my neighbor, the guy who EH’d me to try F3 many years ago.

Never fear, within a few minutes several other Pax arrived, and we were ready to go.

F3 Mission Statement and 5 Core Principles were given.

Warm o Rama

Hill Billies, Merkins, Seal Claps, Mountain Climbers, Overhead Claps, Plank Jacks, Arm Swirly things (forward and reverse), Copperhead Squats, Whirly has the Clap.  (ALL IC, ALL x 12)

THE THANG

Despite Splash suggesting that we not get rocks due to the cold, we had to.  We just had to.  Pax grabbed a medium sized rock, suitable for traveling short distances and handling high reps.

On one side of the parking lot, perform 10 reps of exercise with rock.

Then run/walk across lot to other side with rock.

Complete 10 reps of exercise without rock.

Then run/walk across lot to other side with rock.

Perform 9 reps of exercise with rock.

Continue this pattern until 1 rep of each exercise.

Thus for this “cycle” 110 total reps completed.

Exercise with rock:  Curl

Exercise without rock:  WWII sit up (although Wobegon decided to use the rock.  Nicely done!)

Line up (without rocks) facing the greenway.  Time to test your listening skills.  Much like my high school football days, the pax were to instructed to only run when the count was called.  Thus, YHC would indicate that the count was three. (hut, hut, hike!).  Run to first marker and repeat.  Should anyone flinch and jump offsides, everyone goes all the way back to the beginning.

Results – not bad.  Only one offsides penalty as the pax made it down and back.

Back to the rocks, and repeat previous format.

Exercise with rock:  Over head press

Exercise without rock:  Low Flutter

Another 110 reps done.

Line up again for football drill.

Well done.  No offsides.

Back to rocks.

Exercise with rock:  Curl to Press

Exercise without rock:  Box Cutter

110 more reps.

NMM

Thanks to everyone for coming out to the frozen tundra of Mayhem.

High Cotton is a big fan of Athens, GA music groups.  Tin Roof!  Rusted!!

Suede had previously been an OG/Tractors guy, but is now experiencing the joy of bootcamps.  Well done, sir!

While there was not a real theme to the workout, the playlist was (and has been for the past few 12/2 workouts) dedicated to one of my college roommates.  Eric Miller was murdered by his wife on 12/2/2000.  There is so much about what happened surrounding his death that does not make sense.  I try not to focus on how he died, rather than on what kind of man he was while living.  I could go on and on, but suffice to say that I have no doubt that Eric would be a pax in the Raleigh area region.

We also just passed another anniversary that I would care to forget.  Just over 21 years ago, one of my law school classmates was killed in a motor vehicle accident.  Jascha Gelman was one of those rare individuals that everyone was attracted to.  Beautiful, smart, witty – he had it all.

His family set up a website at the time, which appears to be still working.  http://www.jaschagelman.com/

If 2020 has taught me anything (and it really has), it is that we have to keep on living.  We cannot get bogged down and stop when things get difficult.  Yes this year has sucked on many levels.  But there is so much to be grateful for.  And while I morn for Eric and Jascha, I am so grateful for the fact that they were part of my life.
