TRQ playing scrabble, Lord Huron and COT story and verse. What we do depends on who shows up.

YHC was excited to Q at TRQ for the first time at Boomerang’s invitation. Not much time to plan but last week started thinking of ways to utilize some of the stuff created for previous workouts. For Red Pill / Blue Pill Flatline last week, we used lengths of wood trim with exercises face up, 6 per station. For Scrabble, YHC wrote a letter on the back of each. It’s surprisingly important to do a bit of research and planning to ensure ridiculous things don’t happen.  Examples might be murder bunnies on the back of the letter E or pregnant crab walks on the back of the letter T (Bevo) for what was planned.

Warmup

The PAX assembled, a couple PAX who YHC had not met and a couple newer PAX it was great to see out. Mission and core principles were recited. We did as I recall, SSH, Abe Vigoda, IST, Hillbillies, Forward AST, Backward AST. Mosey to the ledo deck for

The thing

YHC set up scrabble tiles. 25 tiles / exercises / letters, didn’t make the letter Q yet. One exercise per tile.

The PAX were told that what we did would depend on who showed up and that was literally true.

PAX take turns spelling their name with the tiles, flipping them over, and get to choose the reps for their name. 20 was a common choice but it ranged from 1 to maybe 40. YHC isn’t going to list all the letter / exercise assignments but suffice to say they were researched and listing them would be boring. Let’s just say this page was helpful, this page was interesting, this image from the 2nd page was helpful, and a sortable spreadsheet to balance stationary and traveling exercises and arms / legs / core / cardio / etc was useful also.

With the number of PAX, YHC determined any PAX with 2+ parts to their F3 name would pick one, and using 4-5 letters from the name was allowable, and there was only one of each letter so 2nd letters (sorry Goofy, Ziggy, etc) were not used. There was a common letter that was blank for which the PAX could choose their own exercise. As there were no exercises using the benches on the ledo deck, it was popular to call dips, irkins, derkins for the blank letter. Now’s a good time to review the name of the PAX in attendance and cover a bit of what transpired.

Wobegon, Tonka, Goofy, Argyle, Mongoose, Frosbite, Wahoo, Boomerang, Burlap, Starfish, Ziggy Stardust, Earl Gray, Crash from the order in COT … YHC cannot remember but thinks we ended up doing something like

Crash, Zigy, Tonka, Gofy, Argyle, Mongs, Bomer, Starf, EarlG, Wobeg? If I missed any of the PAX whose name we used during the time we had (omissions not intentional, it was dark and I was tired and it has been a few days) or you want me to fix the actual spelling you chose (misspellings unintentional, it was dark and I was tired and it has been a few days), just lmk and I’ll update.

These 8 exercises were common: ww2, merkins, burpees, squat, flutter kick, carolina dry docks, run lap, lunge walk.

It seemed entertaining. We listened to Lord Huron the whole time and there was a decent amount of conversation, anticipation, and groaning once or twice for higher numbers, or PAX calling 1 burpee, which was their right if it was their name.

We moseyed back to start for

Mary

Which was a bit rushed, a 3,2,1 ring of fire (plank with PAX doing merkins in sequence)

COT

YHC slept maybe 1, not more than 2 hours the evening before. Just a lot going on.
Last weekend YHC’s daughter had a knee injury playing soccer that will sideline her for the upcoming school soccer and club volleyball seasons. There are less terrible and more terrible things that can happen to people, and we are blessed with great care and support, but it is tough not to have really sad feelings about something like this. Not because we dream or even hope that our kids will be the next Alex Morgan or Tom Brady, but because physical activity, which I have grown to appreciate more through F3, and the social and connection aspects of rec, club, and school sports, which I have also grown to appreciate more through F3, are affected by things like this. Teens seem more resilient than parents sometimes, I’ll say that seems definitely true in my case. And there will be other activities and other connections to be made even during rehab.  A quick praise for a physician friend in sports medicine who understands and reminded me of the spiritual side of injury in sports: athletic pursuits do not define us as human beings, and in circumstances like this it is important to remember. I feel like this is something each of us engaged with F3 understands implicitly or after a time.
So, YHC told a short and related parable in COT. I warn you that if you start listening to this type of stuff in Spotify and you are like YHC, you may get sucked down the rabbit hole. This was followed by a quick paraphrase and a bit of commentary on a favorite verse, Genesis 50:20. It’s not a perfect context match, but is a reminder that there is a plan, and each of us are part of it. Don’t be afraid, and forgive each other.

NMM

The top 65% of letters in words are just 8 letters. The top 80% are just 12. YHC has a feeling F3 names are more varied than our birth names. This seemed like a good way to learn names and also to give each PAX a chance to lead.

Enjoyed connecting a bit and talking with Wobegon who was a bit early, before the workout.
It was great to see Wahoo out in just his first few weeks with F3, keep on posting.
Always good to see Ziggy and Tonka. Tonka called some fairly high reps for his name.
Now I remember first meeting Argyle at an F3 blood drive, a pleasure to see post with him here this day.
Frosbite – your name shows up as Frosbite and Frostbite on backblasts but I think there is no T in slack. I need to make sure I have this right.
YHC is thankful to all the PAX who posted and were here today. Many of the AOs I attend are more lightly attended (is there a connection?), and as I still feel fairly new to this it is exciting to have larger groups sometimes. I believe it was therapeutic.

YHC believes some of the PAX, if you’re reading this, think it would be diabolically fun to put 8-12 of the toughest exercises you can think of on the back of the most common letters and try the game again. I’d be up for that. Happy to lend out this set, which is also, as it happens, a workout in a bag.

Here’s the Lord Huron playlist. It is identical to a concert performed at Red Hat amphitheater in Raleigh recently. SYITG
