A 420 Education for All
QIC: Doublewide
Date: 04.20.2023
PAX: Giles, Ziggy Stardust, Pony Express, Wobegon, Sweet Tea, Boomerang, D-Day, Green Acres, The Singing Cowboy
A group of more-than-I-expected assembled on the grounds of Speas Global for a beatdown on 4/20. My playlist consisted of an eclectic mix ranging from Phish to Bob Dylan to Cypress Hill (which, sadly, we did not get to).
I started the workout with the mission statement and (maybe for the first time at TRQ?) the 5 Core Principles. I had flashbacks all week of studying for tests in high school using note cards and, like high school, was able to squeak by with all 5 principles more or less in order.
Warm o rama: SSH x20, Abe Vigoda x4, Imperial Walkers x20, Michael Phelps x4 (see what I did there?)
The Thang:
Mosey to the pool deck and partner up. Partner #1 starts the 100 irkins/durkins, 200 LBCs, 300 1-leg steps ups while Partner #2 does a bear crawl down the stairs, turns around, and bear crawls back up. I suggested a modified version of Huckleberry’s “crawl bears” (going up the stairs in reverse with your head low and feet high), but didn’t see many takers on that one. There’s a reason why that was the hardest thing I’ve ever done at a beatdown before. After ~200 step ups, I realized I should’ve switched it with LBCs, so we modified and did dips for the remainder of the reps.
Mosey to the rock pile where everyone found a good-sized rock (and GA found his boulder). We did 4 sets of 20 reps (get it?) of curls, squats, overhead press, mtn climbers, Alabama prom dates, and lunges. Cowboy led the way and had just started his 4th round when time was called.
We moseyed back to the start and, with our 1 minute remaining, I copied what I saw Greenspan do one time and we did 30 seconds each of superman and banana.
End workout while Dave Matthews jammed in the background.
Announcements
“420” was apparently started in 1971 although some PAX had never heard the term (it goes without saying that those PAX had obviously not gone to school at App State)
Petra (D-Day’s daughter and a proud Mt. Tabor Spartan) has a track meet today. Go Spartans!
Prayers
Greenspan made it through surgery and is resting well. We prayed for him and his family.
NMM
- If you need a loan, go see Wobegon. He recently got a dividend check from his investment firm for a $8 (no, I didn’t leave off any zeroes)
- Giles appeared like a ghost out of the early morning gloom
- I was not as good of a Q as Sweet Tea who apparently brought the PAX a gift (!) of banana bread (!!) from Bobby Boy (!!!) for his Q at BnW yesterday
- Ziggy loved some of the “420” bands (Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan) and said it took him back to his college days
- Pony crushed it on the stairs and beat me up and down every time
- Boomerang taught me what a “TRQ mosey” is and we discussed whether PAX are legally allowed to run at TRQ (is this in the by laws?)
- Speaking of Petra above, D-Day told us that she’s now clearing 6’1” on the pole vault! Which means she can jump over some PAX (*cough* Wobegon) but not others (YHC, but you only got 4” to go, Petra!).
- I wasn’t quite ready and didn’t quite hear Green Acres on the EC run when he apparently said something to the effect of “let’s pick up the pace.” Him & Cowboy left me the dust as a result.
- Speaking of him, The Singing Cowboy was going to celebrate his 27th wedding anniversary by (what else?) going to buy other people’s lost luggage at the Miami airport. Way to keep the fire alive, brother!
Thanks for the keys, GA, and happy to lead again if you’ll have me!

Green Acres
Great beatdown! I thought Derkins followed by bear crawl downstairs was a terrible idea, and I was right! 😅. Loved it. Thanks for leading and for the playlist. 👏
D-Day
Fun playlist and good beatdown. I think I started my last 420 Q with Cypress Hill and we finished with brownies. She cleared 6’8” today so I think that is over all the pax heads
Resistor
Great backblast!
