The Big Subfloorowski

QIC: Subfloor

Date: 3/15/2025

PAX: Dr. Toot (WD), Tonka (WB), Zima, Drip, Ziggy Stardust, Subfloor (QIC)

YHC had trouble getting someone to sign up to lead March 15, probably because it was at the end of spring break. So YHC will Q and had a couple of options, bring back the Fibonacci beatdown or try out the long planned Bowling Beatdown. I think we may have enough PAX, let’s bowl.

The Bowling Beatdown was thought up many months ago, trying to think up some team competition. After polling Slack to see if anyone had pins, YHC started to save his M’s coffee creamer to use as pins. Believe it or not, this didn’t take as long as you would think. Now that there are 10, how much water to weight them. Attempt one, way too much water, pins did not fall down. Attempt two, a lot less water seems to work.

The Thang

Mosey around parking lot and meet at playground area where YHC had the pins set up. Get in line by height and count of by twos to split into teams.

Then we bowl. Pins were set up two parking spaces from where the bowl line is, about 18 feet. One PAX from each team rolls up to twice on the first frame. Each pin corresponds to a particular exercise. However may of those pins get knocked over is the rep count for the other team, 10 if spare and 20 if strike. So if one team hits a strike, the other team does 20 reps of each of the 10 exercises for a total of 200 reps. Each frame total would then also be a bonus exercise rep count that would increase after each frame. Maybe we could finish 10 frames in an hour. Here are the exercises:

  • Burpee
  • Plank Jack
  • SSH
  • Nolan Ryan
  • Squat
  • Boxcutter
  • Monkey Humpers
  • Merkin
  • LBC
  • Lunge
  • Bonus Exercise: Low Flutters

The idea was to bring in a little bit of team competition to a beatdown.

Here is how it went down:

YHC told the PAX to line up by height so we can split into teams. Zima quickly secured one end of the line with the Q quickly standing next to him. After that, it was apparent that this may spiral out of control since the PAX had difficulty determining how to line up. Fortunately, Zima spoke up to clarify that it was alphabetically by height which seemed to help.

So we had teams and I thought this would be a fair way to split the teams, but it would not be so. Zima went first and hit 6 with two throws but Tonka hit a strike and quickly showed that this well thought out beatdown was going to fall apart. Team 1/A finished 6 reps of our 6 exercises before Team 2/B finished their 20 reps of the first exercise, burpees. YHC said to hold Al Gore until the other team was done, but Drip suggested we help the other team out, so that’s what we did. Bonus exercise was eliminated from rest of beatdown.

Next was Dr. Toot who threw a gutter ball first but was able to get 2 the next throw. Drip nailed another strike. Clearly the teams were not equal. We all just did the larger rep counts.

After Team 1 had two strikes in a row, Zima put the pressure on the Q to follow up with a strike. YHC threw a gutter ball but was able to nail 8 on the second throw and hopefully stay in his team’s good graces. Ziggy’s frame will remain unmentioned for security purposes.

In total, we were able to finish 6 frames and Team 2 improved. Overall, I think we all had fun but maybe this beatdown needs to be workshopped a bit more.

NMM

  • Toot is always thankful during Warm-O-Rama when you count pass 11. However, if you only get to 10, the “would it hurt” comes out. He tried to be sneaky and I was able to thwart him once, but he is very persistent and won in the end.
  • Zima talked a lot about AI and apparently has a podcast about it. Dr. Toot uses AI on x-rays, so maybe he should go on Zima’s podcast, but he probably wouldn’t show.
  • Ziggy was clearly handicapped by only having one contact in but his driving to and from the AO was straight as an arrow.
  • Very happy birthday to Tonka who is now just a hate. His bowling prowess was probably helped by basically being able to reach the pins from two parking spaces back.
  • Toot and Ziggy’s pride is still intact and refused to go to closer line.
  • Drip is becoming a regular at Alcatraz which is great to have his encouraging, calm nature at the AO.
  • Tonka is hoping that the AO gets a basketball hoop so we can do a beatdown with that, maybe HORSE. YHC mention that there is a GaGa pit, hoping that someday, someone will lead a GaGa ball themed workout.
  • Thanks for indulging the Q in bowling and we’ll have to try it again sometime.
