Exactly what is Tabata? Found out what it’s not!

It was a busy week, so I am just now posting the BB from The Outhouse.

Q’ing for this crew was lovely.  It was a serene and gentle way to start the day/week.  We were honored to have a Zuckerberg appearance who should be renamed Sandbag for how he dominated the end of the workout.  Will I see Zuckerberg again soon, or will he Zion us and be an Outhouse One and Doner?  Bevo and Burns were also in attendance and they also have wheels.

As I contemplated my Q, I kept thinking how I had never attended or led a Tabata workout – and per Zima, I still haven’t.  I knew it was based on High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT.  Here is a Tabata definition I found after Outhouse.  I got part of it correct…

The Tabata Protocol Format

  • 20 seconds of a very high intensity exercise (e.g., sprints, burpees, squat jumps, etc.)  —  Too Short
  • 10 seconds of rest  —  Too Long
  • Repeat 8 times for a total of 4 minutes  —  Too Few

So I thought we should use the parking lot at Mt. Tabor Methodist again – Sgt. Schultz had led us in a great WIB there recently.  I kept thinking about a variety of exercises that would work our legs/cardio, arms and core, but I knew there was more to do – it came to me in the middle of the night — bring a bunch of bricks.  So I am off to the Outhouse with bricks and my new Tabata app on my phone.  I put the cycles at 60 seconds with a 5 second rest, seemed reasonable to me at the time — did not pass muster with the PAX.  I thought the faster we ran up and back down the hill, only toting the bricks one way, the more time we would have to recover.  So there were a few Omahas called – some by the Q.  I knew I was on shaky leadership ground when Burns moved my cones to reduce the distance running up the hill with the bricks on our first cycle.  And he was one of the nicest guys in attendance on Monday.

So with no warm up (another crowd pleaser) we left the dark confines of Linebach, crossing Robinhood, to go to Mt. Tabor UMC.  I had parked my car at the bottom of a slight incline and opened my trunk and to offer each of my dear friends two presents.  BTW, I have not received one thank you note.  So we did the following and got through 75% of it before time got us – just wait till next time!  The PAX begrudgingly gave back their presents and we returned to Linebach just in time for our COT.

OK, today I learned about Tabata.  I’ve got that going for me.  I also learned that many in F3 are incredibly OCD – stacking bricks became a work of art.  Greenspan, so sorry i kept knocking over your Stonehenge replica.

I was also reminded of this great group of guys who work hard to be better men.  It is very encouraging to be a part of F3 and be pushed to be better person in all aspects of my life.  And, to see I am not alone. We are all flawed, but desire to move in the right direction.  Thank you.

Announcements:  Go to Lunch Bunch!  Overflow Shelter at First Pres through March!

Prayer Requests:  Spamalot had his 25th Anniversary.

I was honored to take us out, to delete my Tabata app, to donate my bricks to Habitat and to return the keys to another Mr. Nice Guy, Greenspan.
